This remarkable building has a really fascinating history. Previously only marshy ground, the area in which the palace now sits was once even a site of debauchery, until the gentry started building their properties on it in the 17th century.
Buckingham House was built in the early 18th century. After this, it was extensively remodeled, turning it into the famous building that it is today. Queen Victoria was the first official royal resident; though the palace was far from the elegant affair it is today. The chimneys smoked so badly that they often had to be put out, leaving the inhabitants shivering in the cold! Likewise, the gas lamps were thought to be so dangerous that it was considered quite miraculous that they hadn’t resulted in explosion… which certainly would have changed the face of British royal history forever.
